COMPARE PARTICLES

似ている助詞を比べよう

Some particles can look similar at first. Compare them in real situations.

は VS が

「は」と「が」はどう違う?

Both は and が can mark a person or thing, but they put the focus in different places.

THE BIG PICTURE

は often marks an already-known topic. が can introduce or highlight new information.

Difference between Japanese particles は and が
NEW → TOPIC

New information can first appear with が. After it becomes the topic of the conversation, は can be used.

Cinderella example showing new information with が and topic with は
IN CONVERSATION
Japanese conversation examples showing は and が
TOPIC + FOCUS

は can set the topic, while が can show the specific part being described.

ANOTHER DIFFERENCE|は CAN SHOW CONTRAST

Compare が and は in the same situation. With が, the sentence simply describes Cinderella’s hair. With は, depending on the context, the listener may feel that her hair is being contrasted with something else.

With は, the listener may think: “Her hair is beautiful… but what about something else?” This contrast depends on the context.

に VS を

入る? 出る?

Use に for a destination or goal. Use を when leaving or moving through a place.

GO INTO / TOWARD
でんしゃにのります。 Densha ni norimasu.

I get on the train.

へやにはいります。 Heya ni hairimasu.

I enter the room.

GO OUT / MOVE THROUGH
でんしゃをおります。 Densha o orimasu.

I get off the train.

へやをでます。 Heya o demasu.

I leave the room.

BONUS|GOAL OR ROUTE?

You don’t need to memorize this yet. Just notice that を can sometimes show the route you move through.

Yama ni noborimasu.
I climb the mountain.
The mountain is the goal.
やまをのぼります。
Yama o noborimasu.
I climb the mountain.
The mountain is the route you move along.
Japanese particles に and を showing mountain as goal or route
に VS で

そこに行く? そこにいる? そこで何かする?

The particle depends on what happens at the place. Compare these three common patterns.

DESTINATION

Ken goes to the library.

Where does Ken go? → に
LOCATION / EXISTENCE
けんは としょかんにいます。 Ken wa toshokan ni imasu.

PLACE OF ACTION
けんは としょかんでほんを よみます。 Ken wa toshokan de hon o yomimasu.
