Reading Prices in Japanese
Learn how to read yen, ask the price, and understand common amounts you will see in Japan.
Common Amounts
Start with a few amounts you will see often.
Important Sound Changes
The changes are easier to remember if you separate hundreds from thousands.
100 = hyaku
Most numbers use hyaku . Only 3, 6, and 8 change.
1,000 = sen
For thousands, only 3 and 8 need special attention.
6 changes in the hundreds, but not in the thousands: 600 = roppyaku , but 6,000 = rokusen .
Put the Numbers Together
Real prices are just combinations of the numbers you already know.
Ask the Price
You only need two simple patterns.
Use these by themselves.
These need a noun after them.
Answer with the Price
Read the amount and add the polite ending.
